Beaches in Myanmar

There are two beaches that western tourists use in Myanmar; NGAPALI BEACH and the more recently developed NGWE SAUNG BEACH. Both are on the west coast of Myanmar on the Bay of Bengal and both are in full operation from October to May when the rainy season closes most of the hotels down.

Ngapali Beach

Ngapali Beach is 45 minutes flight northwest from Yangon and in the high season some domestic airlines also connect to it from Bagan or Heho airports. There are no suitable roads to reach it. Located on the Rakhine coast, near the small town of Thandwe, it is an unspoiled beach, stretching over 3 km and offers the blue-green sea of the Bay of Bengal, white sand and swaying palm trees for visitors to enjoy. Nearby are a couple of fishing villages which are interesting places to visit, either by bicycle or by car. There is an elephant camp near the town of Thandwe which is an interesting excursion for those who tire of the sun and sand. Thankfully, there are no jet skis or such to spoil the serenity and tranquility of this untouched beach. Although there are only a few hotels (with more are being built), there is a full range of quality with a predominance of deluxe hotels. Ngapali Beach is a great place to end a Myanmar tour while relaxing with water, sun and sand amidst peaceful surroundings. Click here for details of beach packages at Ngapali Beach

Ngwe Saung

Ngwe Saung is also on the western coast of Myanmar on the Bay of Bengal, nearly directly west of Yangon and a bit south of Ngapali. It has become popular with tourists in just the last two or three years and the quality of the beach, sand and water is comparable to Ngapali Beach. There are only a few hotels (most of them are deluxe or superior category) however a few more are being built. Until recently, the beach could be reached only by car (about 5-6 hours drive) from Yangon, or by a tourist ferry that would make an overnight trip (but sometimes the boat would not run if they did not have enough bookings). Now, the new domestic air carrier Air Bagan, has started flying to Pathein on a regular basis. It is about a 25 minute flight to the city of Pathein and from there a one hour transfer by car to the beach. Like Ngapali Beach, the beauty of the beach is unspoiled and visitors can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing holiday. Click here for details of beach packages at Ngwe Saung Beach

OTHER BEACH AREAS. There are other beach areas in Myanmar with hotels but they are used more by locals and the beach quality and hotel quality are not as good as Ngapali or Ngwe Saung beach.

Chaungtha Beach is a newly opened beach of Myanmar. Located just 6 hours drive from Yangon. An alternative route is an overnight steamer trip from Yangon, along Twante canal up to Pathein and then a one and a half hour drive by coach to Chaungtha Beach- this makes for an interesting trip. This beach is also very popular and famous beach in Myanmar. The local people and the tourists visit there to enjoy the un-spoilt beach from November to April.

Maung-ma-gan Beach is long and shallow, located on the Taninthayi coast in the south of Myanmar. It is totally un-spoilt, but is currently under development. It is reached from Dawei, which is a 75-minute flight away from Yangon.

Let-khok-kone beach, located 30 km from Yangon is the nearest beach and is therefore a popular weekend picnic site. It is reached by a ferry boat ride to Dallah followed by a 3 hours' drive. This beach can get very busy at times, especially on public holidays.

Kanthaya Beach, located on the Rakhine coast is about 290 km from Yangon and reached by an 8-hour drive.
